Urban Seagull
152cm x 101cm
Entrant in the Sulman Prize 2014
Graffiti is a term given to artistic drawings or paintings on walls of buildings, railway corridor, fences and public amenities.
More than often the graffiti is just tagging, which is an identifying mark or signature of the graffitist. Katrina felt tags have limited artistic merit and placed together along great swathes of walls they tend to look like ‘mind rubbish’ exposed.
For this painting Katrina drew parallels with seagulls living in an urban environment and defecating over the street scape, thereby defacing and diminishing it, much the same way that tagging does.
Katrina drew inspiration for this painting from the landscape in St.Kilda, Melbourne, placing a seagull’s head on to a male body whose only interest is tagging.
Urban Seagull is the 1st in a collection of eight by Katrina titled - The Bird Series
